ASAKE, BURNA BOY, REMA, WIZKID, TYLA DOMINATE 2025 MTV VMA BEST AFROBEATS NOMINATIONS

Afrobeats is once again taking center stage on the global music scene, with some of its biggest stars securing top spots in the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) nominations. The Best Afrobeats category features a star-studded lineup that reflects the genre’s meteoric rise and international influence.

The full list of nominees was unveiled by MTV and CBS ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled for Monday, September 8, at the UBS Arena in New York. The event will air live on MTV (DStv Channel 130) from 12:00 a.m. WAT.

Nigerian sensation Asake leads the charge with two nominations in the Best Afrobeats category, “Active” featuring American rapper Travis Scott, and “Get It Right” with Nigerian songstress Tems. Both tracks showcase a seamless fusion of Afrobeats and global pop.

Burna Boy also earns two nods — “TaTaTa” with Travis Scott for Best Afrobeats and “Higher” in the Video for Good category, reflecting his talent for pairing powerful messages with worldwide appeal.

South African hitmaker Tyla, whose career has skyrocketed internationally, scores nominations for “PUSH 2 START” in both Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography, further cementing her status as a dynamic performer with viral dance influence.

Rema joins the list with his soulful single “Baby (Is It A Crime)”, while Wizkid’s collaboration with Brent Faiyaz on “Piece Of My Heart” also earns recognition. Rounding out the category are MOLIY, Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea with the vibrant remix of “Shake It To The Max (FLY)”.

This year’s nominees underscore Afrobeats’ diversity, cross-cultural collaborations, and growing dominance in global music, a testament to Africa’s enduring sound and storytelling power.
