The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This holiday comes as part of a seven-day national mourning period initiated by the Presidency to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Nigerian leader.
Buhari died in London at a private clinic, as confirmed by a statement issued by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu. His passing has triggered a wave of condolences from across the country and the international community.
In an official statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Buhari as “a patriot who led Nigeria with honour and unwavering dedication.”
“The holiday is a symbolic gesture to honour his role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy and fostering national development,” Tunji-Ojo said. “This is a moment for reflection on the values he stood for — unity, discipline, and integrity.”
Citizens are urged to mark the day with peace and respect, upholding Buhari’s ideals of patriotism and national unity. The national flag will continue to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The government also extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning his loss, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
