Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has publicly thanked President Bola Tinubu for his role in de-escalating the prolonged political crisis that recently engulfed the state. Fubara described the President’s intervention as timely and crucial to restoring stability and ensuring governance continued without further disruption.
Speaking at a gathering organized in his honour by supporters under the Simplified Movement, held at their secretariat in Port Harcourt, Fubara acknowledged the difficult period and praised the President’s involvement, which allowed him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, to remain in office despite mounting tensions.
“Without Mr. President’s mediation, the situation could have taken a different and more dangerous turn,” Fubara told attendees, calling on his supporters to recognize and appreciate the President’s efforts in brokering peace.
He also expressed gratitude to Rivers residents and Nigerians at large for their support, loyalty, and prayers during the political impasse. While acknowledging the emotions the situation stirred, he urged his supporters to understand that peaceful resolution, not protests alone, is what ensures long-term political stability.
Fubara extended an apology to those who may have felt let down by his approach to the crisis, stating that every step he took was aimed at preserving the peace and progress of the state. “I have no regrets because my intentions were always in the interest of Rivers people,” he said.
On his relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor, Nyesom Wike, Fubara signaled hope for reconciliation. “There is no reason why there will not be peace between me and my oga,” he said, revealing that several peace meetings have already taken place, including some hosted at Wike’s residence.
Although the political rift affected the commissioning of new projects during the May 29 Democracy Day celebrations, Governor Fubara assured his supporters that development remains a top priority and expressed deep appreciation for the continued solidarity.
President Tinubu had earlier announced the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, a move that formed part of broader efforts to quell the tension and create space for reconciliation.
