Tragedy struck in Lagos as a commercial motorcyclist, identified as 60-year-old Wasiu Babatunde Adeniran, lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour in the Alakuko area of the state.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 4 p.m. on May 20, 2025, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. According to a statement released by the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, Adeniran was riding his motorcycle when he lost control amid the strong currents caused by the rain and was carried away by the flood.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the details in the statement, noting that the motorcyclist fell off and both he and his bike were dragged away by the fast-moving water.
A search operation was immediately launched, and his motorcycle was discovered several metres away from the scene around 6 p.m. that same evening. Unfortunately, Adeniran’s body was not recovered until the following morning.
The incident has once again raised concerns about flood safety and the risks posed by inadequate drainage systems during heavy rains, particularly in vulnerable areas like Alakuko.
