Despite mounting insecurity and rising tensions back home, the Nigerian government has insisted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains in full control of national governance—even as he continues his extended stay in Europe.
In a statement issued Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency reassured the public that Tinubu is “fully engaged” with the affairs of the nation, even while thousands of miles away.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance even though he is away in Europe,” the statement emphasized.
According to the release, Tinubu’s absence is “temporary” and falls within a “communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks.” It was further revealed that after departing Paris, the President is currently in London, maintaining daily communications with key government officials.
He is said to be issuing “critical directives,” particularly to security chiefs, to respond to escalating threats in several parts of the country.
“His return to Abuja and resumption of duties at Aso Villa will follow the conclusion of the Easter holiday,” the statement noted. “The President’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and his administration continues to function effectively under his leadership.”
This assurance comes at a time when Nigeria faces a wave of violence, particularly in the northern regions.
In Plateau State, the bloodshed continues. On Sunday night, gunmen stormed a community at about 8pm, killing over 50 people, injuring scores—including women and children—and setting ablaze more than 40 homes. The massacre occurred just two weeks after a similar attack in Bokkos Local Government Area, which claimed over 80 lives.
Meanwhile, in Borno State, the governor has publicly sounded the alarm, warning that parts of the state are slipping out of government control due to persistent bandit and insurgent activities.
Tragedy struck again when an explosive device, reportedly planted by Boko Haram militants, detonated on the Damboa-Maiduguri Road, killing at least eight people and leaving many others critically injured.
As the nation bleeds, many Nigerians are demanding more visible leadership on the ground. However, the Presidency insists that there has been no disruption in governance and urges citizens to remain calm.
While President Tinubu’s return is expected shortly after Easter, his extended absence during a period of national volatility continues to spark fierce debate—and deep concern—across the country.
