Tensions are boiling over in Rivers State as the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has fiercely condemned the sweeping suspension of all political office holders by the state’s sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas.
The controversial decision, announced on Wednesday, saw the removal of key government figures, including the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Commissioners, Board Members, Special Advisers, and other top officials—a move the IYC has described as nothing short of a full-blown military coup in disguise.
‘A RECKLESS POWER GRAB’ – IYC FIRES BACK
In a scathing statement signed by Secretary-General Maobuye Nangi Obu, the IYC condemned the mass suspensions, calling them “an affront to the rights of Rivers people” and warning that the state is now at the mercy of a few handpicked loyalists.
“This reckless move, executed under the guise of presidential authority, is a desperate attempt to remove all possible checks and balances,” the statement read.
According to the IYC, this unilateral purge has severe security implications, fuels political instability, and is pushing Rivers State towards a dangerous crisis.
‘IT’S ABOUT POWER, NOT GOVERNANCE’
The IYC rejected any claims that the suspensions were made for the benefit of Rivers people, insisting that the move is solely about consolidating power at the expense of democracy.
“We categorically condemn this dictatorial action and call on all Rivers people to stand against this blatant abuse of power. The state belongs to the people, not to a cabal of political opportunists seeking to milk it dry,” the group declared.
DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE REVERSAL
The IYC is demanding an immediate reversal of the suspensions and a full return to democratic governance.
“Democracy must be restored, and Rivers people must not be silenced. We demand an immediate reversal of this illegal suspension. Rivers State must not be turned into the personal estate of a single individual and his cronies,” the group warned.
