In a landmark move to speed up justice delivery and decongest court dockets, Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, has certified two new private Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) centres, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to efficient and accessible legal solutions.
The newly registered ADR centres—Praeclarus Alternative Dispute Resolution Services and Harmony Arbitration, Mediation, and Peace Building Centre—both based in Port Harcourt, were officially presented with certificates at the High Court Complex over the weekend.
A Game-Changer for Justice in Rivers
Justice Amadi, who also serves as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Rivers State Multi-Door Courthouse (RSMDC), underscored the critical role ADR plays in modernizing the legal system. He urged the new centres to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards, emphasizing that any breach of ADR regulations could lead to immediate deregistration.
“We are committed to reducing the backlog of cases in the courts and providing a faster, more efficient route to justice. ADR is a powerful tool that ensures disputes are resolved without unnecessary delays. I encourage lawyers and litigants to take full advantage of it,” Amadi stated.
Enhancing Trust & Expanding ADR’s Reach
Director of the Rivers State Multi-Door Courthouse, Victor Nweke, highlighted the strategic benefits of registering private ADR centres. He explained that the RSMDC would co-refer cases to these certified ADR bodies, further decentralizing case management and increasing access to justice.
“This collaboration will not only relieve courts of overwhelming caseloads but also build public trust in ADR as a viable dispute resolution mechanism. Walk-in cases will now be handled seamlessly, with their outcomes gaining official recognition through the RSMDC,” Nweke explained.
He further noted that decisions reached at registered ADR centres would hold res judicata status, meaning they would be legally binding and enforceable in court—strengthening the credibility and efficiency of the ADR process.
Setting a Standard for ADR Excellence
Speaking on behalf of the newly certified centres, Alice Lawrence-Nemi, leader of Praeclarus Alternative Dispute Resolution Services and former Rivers State Commissioner for Education, expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its commitment to advancing ADR.
“We are honored by this recognition and deeply committed to upholding the standards of excellence that this certification represents. With the judiciary’s continued support, we look forward to expanding ADR’s impact—not just in Rivers State, but across the region,” she stated.
