The push for the creation of Ogoja State from the present Cross River State is gaining significant traction, with stakeholders uniting to advance their demand. This renewed effort was highlighted during a public forum organized by the Old Ogoja Province People’s Initiative in Calabar, where key leaders voiced their commitment to the cause.
THE TIME IS NOW” – ADVOCATES PUSH FOR OGOJA STATE
Convener of the forum, Papa Dorn Cklaimz Enamhe, declared that the people of Ogoja are ready to see their long-standing demand for statehood fulfilled.
“We need to look beyond past setbacks and focus on the future—our moment is now,” he said. “The Ogoja people are united in this cause, and even a serving governor has given his blessing for us to proceed.”
He further revealed that the movement enjoys widespread support, including backing from local government chairmen, councillors, senators, and paramount rulers within the proposed state.
HISTORICAL INJUSTICE AND THE CASE FOR STATEHOOD
Retired Colonel Pam Ogar, a former Military Administrator of Kwara State, highlighted a historical oversight, noting that all former provincial headquarters in Nigeria had been elevated to state status—except Ogoja.
“Ogoja has the landmass, resources, and capable personnel to govern itself effectively. It is time to correct this imbalance,” Ogar asserted.
OVERCOMING PAST DIVISIONS
Professor Francis Mogu, former Secretary of the Movement for the Creation of Ogoja State, pointed out that internal divisions and lack of unity had stalled past efforts. However, he expressed optimism that with the renewed determination and alignment of key stakeholders, the dream is closer to reality than ever before.
“God’s time is the best, and this is our time,” he affirmed.
ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND FUTURE PROSPECTS
Former Ogoja LGA Chairman, Rita Anyim, reinforced the economic potential of the proposed state, asserting that it has the natural and human resources necessary to thrive independently.
“Ogoja State would be one of the most viable states in Nigeria. We have the resources to drive sustainable development,” she said.

As the campaign for Ogoja State gathers momentum, stakeholders are urging political leaders and the federal government to give due consideration to their demand. With strong historical justification, economic viability, and overwhelming support from local leaders, the movement is poised to make a compelling case for the actualization of Ogoja State.
