TENSION ESCALATES IN RIVERS STATE AS ARMED CULTISTS AMBUSH SOLDIERS PROTECTING OIL PIPELINE

A routine security operation turned into a fierce confrontation Monday morning, as heavily armed gunmen, believed to be cultists, launched a ruthless attack on soldiers stationed to protect a vital crude oil pipeline in Okporowo, a community within Igbu Orlukwor clan in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

At approximately 11 a.m., the ambush erupted with ferocious gunfire. One soldier was critically injured in the onslaught, leaving the military outpost shaken. Yet, the soldiers, armed with superior firepower, quickly retaliated, forcing the attackers to retreat into the thick, unforgiving terrain.

In the aftermath, chaos swept through the community. As rumors of military reprisals spread like wildfire, terrified residents scrambled to flee the area, fearing that the soldiers’ pursuit of the attackers would lead to further bloodshed.

The frightening assault drew swift condemnation from local leaders. Prince Ike Ehie, the monarch of Igbu Orlukwor, did not mince words in his public statement. Describing the attack as a “blatant affront and insult” to the military and its constitutional duties, he called for urgent action against the perpetrators.

“This is an attack not just on our soldiers but on the very foundation of law and order,” the royal father declared. He demanded that those responsible be swiftly apprehended and held accountable. At the same time, he urged security forces to act with both professionalism and precision as they continue to hunt down the criminals.

With tensions running high, Prince Ike also delivered a stark warning to local leaders. He reminded them of their responsibility to ensure the safety of the kingdom, threatening severe consequences— including removal from office— for any leader found neglecting their duty in the face of such security breaches.

As the search for the gunmen intensifies, the community remains on edge, hoping for justice to be served while praying for the swift recovery of the wounded soldier. The incident leaves one chilling question hanging in the air: just how far will the violence in Rivers State escalate before peace is restored?
