In a major crackdown on illegal oil bunkering, the Nigerian Army has made significant strides in the Niger Delta, apprehending 29 suspected oil thieves and recovering over 60,000 litres of stolen crude oil. The operation, which took place between February 3 and 9, 2025, involved a coordinated effort between the army and other security agencies, leading to the deactivation of 24 illegal refining sites and the demobilization of 11 boats used by the criminals.
The latest operation, described by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah, highlighted the military’s relentless drive to eliminate illegal oil activities in the region. “In this joint operation, our troops have not only captured criminals but also destroyed significant quantities of stolen oil and illegal equipment,” stated Lt. Col. Danjuma.
The operation covered various locations, including the Imo River, Asa, Obigbo, Buguma, and parts of Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States. In one of the key operations along the Imo River, six illegal refining sites were deactivated, along with the destruction of 113 drum pots and 83 drum receivers. More than 18,000 litres of stolen crude were recovered, and two boats used for the illegal activities were seized.
In Obigbo Local Government Area, the army uncovered a large stash of stolen products, including a reservoir containing over 1,000 litres of crude oil and 100 sacks filled with over 1,500 litres of stolen crude. Another significant find occurred around Ebocha Well 5, where troops raided an active illegal refining site and recovered large quantities of stolen and illegally refined products, including 2,220 litres of refined Automotive Gasoline Oil (AGO).
The operation also targeted the suspected illegal bunkering activities in Delta State, where over 70 sacks containing more than 2,800 litres of stolen crude were seized near the SEEPCO Energy pipeline. Additionally, troops intercepted a fleeing suspected oil thief in Isoko South LGA, abandoning a vehicle loaded with 15 sacks of AGO.
In Bayelsa State, the operation led to the destruction of two illegal refining sites in the Joinkrama 4 and Okarki areas, while troops also intercepted 2,500 litres of AGO in sacks around Biseni and Akpedi communities.
The crackdown continues to intensify across the Niger Delta, with the army maintaining a strong presence in Akwa Ibom State, denying criminals any breathing room to continue their illegal operations. The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its mission to eradicate oil theft and illegal refining, ensuring that the region’s resources are protected for the benefit of the nation.
