On February 3, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law a bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State. This initiative aims to address environmental challenges in the Niger Delta region by focusing on environmental technology and research.
Recall that over the years, Ogoni indigenes and various groups have asked the Federal government to establish this university in Ogoni land.
Following the proposals, a bill was passed on the floor of the National Assembly and the Senate passed it in March 2022.
But the bill was not assented into law until Monday ending years of agitation .
The university is expected to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as diplomas, with a special emphasis on environmental technology and research. This development is part of broader efforts to enhance educational opportunities in Ogoniland, a region historically affected by environmental degradation due to industrial activities.
The establishment of this institution underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing historical injustices and fostering inclusive national development. It follows the recent approval of another federal university in Southern Kaduna, reflecting a push for balanced educational opportunities across different regions.
The creation of the Federal University of Environmental Technology is anticipated to enhance educational access in Ogoniland, contributing to the region’s socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
