Port Harcourt — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has warned Governor Siminalayi Fubara that public displays of loyalty to President Bola Tinubu will not automatically guarantee a second term in office.
Wike made the remark while addressing political supporters and stakeholders, insisting that electoral success is determined by performance, grassroots support and genuine service to the people, not by political slogans or chants.
According to the former governor, governance should be people-centred and result-driven, noting that Rivers residents are more concerned about tangible development, security and economic opportunities than political alignments.
“Pro-Tinubu chants will not secure you a second term. What will matter is what you do for the people of Rivers State,” Wike was quoted as saying.
He cautioned that relying solely on perceived backing from the centre could create a false sense of security, stressing that political survival depends on the will of the electorate. Wike added that leaders who lose touch with the grassroots often pay the price at the polls.
The FCT minister further advised that political leaders should focus on consolidating unity within their states rather than deepening divisions through power struggles and public posturing.
Wike’s comments come amid ongoing political tension in Rivers State, following months of disagreements and realignments that have reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Observers say the statement underscores the deepening rift between the two former allies and signals an intensifying battle for political relevance ahead of future elections in Rivers State.
