Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was on Monday, December 29, 2025, involved in a serious road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria.
The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. near Makun, close to the Sagamu interchange on the Lagos-bound section of the busy highway.
According to reports, Joshua was a rear-seat passenger in a Lexus SUV that was travelling at high speed at the time of the crash. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake another car and subsequently rammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed and a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre were major contributing factors to the crash. Some early accounts also suggested a possible tyre burst, which may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The accident resulted in two fatalities, both confirmed to be other passengers in the SUV. Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries and was reportedly conscious throughout the rescue operation. He was pulled from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
In addition, one other occupant suffered injuries, while two passengers escaped unhurt, according to authorities.
Police and road safety officials have since launched an investigation into the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Videos circulating on social media show Joshua being assisted out of the damaged vehicle, visibly shaken but alive.
The incident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways.
