Authorities in Iran have carried out the execution of three men convicted of rape in the northern city of Gorgan, according to official reports on Saturday.
The head of the local judiciary, Heydar Asiabi, confirmed the executions, which were conducted at dawn within the city’s prison facility. The men were found guilty of participating in a gang rape, following swift arrests made after three women came forward with reports.
Under Iranian law, both murder and rape are crimes that carry the death penalty. The Islamic Republic continues to rank among the highest in the world for executions, second only to China, according to organizations such as Amnesty International.
Asiabi noted that the case progressed quickly due to the prompt identification and apprehension of the suspects, though no further information about the victims or the timeline of events was released.
While most executions in Iran occur behind prison walls at dawn, the country has also conducted public hangings. Earlier this month, a man was publicly executed in the northwest after being found guilty of raping and killing a young girl, a case that drew widespread national attention and outrage.
