Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending decades of political affiliation with the party he helped to establish.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate withdrawal from the PDP, citing “irreconcilable differences” and a loss of alignment with the party’s core ideals.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
Reflecting on his long political journey, Atiku expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party provided him, including his time as Vice President (1999–2007) and two presidential candidacies under its platform.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he noted.
Describing his decision as “heartbreaking,” the former PDP chieftain said the party had strayed from its original path.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he added.
Atiku concluded the letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership well, expressing gratitude for the support he received over the years.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”
The letter was received and acknowledged by Hammardama Abubakar on the same day, July 14, 2025.
Atiku’s resignation is expected to spark political conversations nationwide, especially as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
