Over 24 hours after a disturbing attack on a Yobe State traffic official, the Nigerian Army has remained silent, raising public concern and outrage. The incident, which involved military personnel reportedly from the 241 Recce Battalion in Nguru, left the victim, Yunusa Mohammed, critically injured and hospitalized at the Federal Medical Centre in Nguru.
According to eyewitness accounts, the altercation began when officials of the Yobe Road Transport Management Agency (YOROTA) stopped an army officer for a routine motorcycle check. The officer, said to be a Lieutenant, reacted violently by slapping and assaulting one of the officials on duty.
The situation quickly escalated when the officer allegedly returned to the scene with reinforcements. Riding in two tricycles, the group of soldiers reportedly stormed the YOROTA office and attacked multiple officials. During the chaos, Yunusa Mohammed sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he is now fighting for his life.
Despite growing calls for accountability, the Nigerian Army has yet to release any official statement or confirm the identities of the soldiers involved in the attack. The silence has drawn criticism from civil society groups and concerned citizens who are demanding justice for the brutal assault.
Many see the incident as another example of impunity among some members of the military and a lack of disciplinary action from higher authorities. As Mohammed receives treatment, pressure continues to mount on the army to take swift action and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
