President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to removing bureaucratic barriers that hinder Nigeria’s agricultural potential, particularly in livestock and food production.
During a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the Copacabana Forte, Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria is undergoing economic reforms aimed at enhancing global competitiveness especially in the agriculture sector, where the country already holds a strong advantage.
The President noted that his government is focused on achieving food sovereignty and boosting agricultural exports. He stressed that outdated procedures and red tape must be dismantled to fast-track progress in sectors such as poultry, fisheries, cattle farming, and the emerging blue economy.
“Our priority is to eliminate all roadblocks and streamline processes across sectors like trade, energy transition, aviation, and agriculture to ensure food security and create jobs,” Tinubu said.
He praised Brazil’s research and development efforts, noting that collaboration between both countries could lead to breakthroughs in livestock health, improved breeds, and sanitary standards. Brazil, one of the world’s largest food producers, is expected to partner with Nigeria on agricultural innovation and development.
Brazilian President Lula da Silva responded by assuring Nigeria of his country’s readiness to fast-track and update existing agreements. He pledged to remove bureaucratic delays and finalize Memoranda of Understanding during Tinubu’s next official visit.
Several Nigerian officials and state governors were in attendance, including the Ministers of Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Foreign Affairs, alongside governors from Benue, Niger, Lagos, Delta, and Ogun States.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun affirmed the commitment of sub-national governments to support federal efforts to reposition agriculture. He noted that the inclusion of a business forum during Tinubu’s Brazil visit will encourage investment and fresh ideas to accelerate transformation in the sector.
Minister of Agriculture Senator Abubakar Kyari reiterated the President’s unwavering focus on food security, highlighting that Nigeria’s fertiliser production capacity positions it well for global partnerships. Livestock Minister Idi Maiha outlined key areas for cooperation with Brazil, including disease control, animal health services, and genetic research.
The meeting signals a renewed momentum for Nigeria to modernize its agricultural system through international collaboration and local government involvement.
