The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has firmly distanced itself from former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, stating that he will not be contesting on its platform in the 2027 general elections.
This clarification comes in response to recent comments by political associate Buba Galadima, who claimed Kwankwaso would remain in the NNPP and eventually run for president again under its banner.
In a statement issued on Saturday, NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, debunked Galadima’s assertion, stressing that both Kwankwaso and Galadima had been expelled from the party due to anti-party activities.
“Rabiu Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima no longer represent or speak for the NNPP. Their expulsion stands, and they cannot contest under our platform,” Major stated.
He revealed that the party’s Memorandum of Understanding with the Kwankwasiyya Movement ended shortly after the 2023 presidential elections, and the fallout from that alliance led to internal crises, including attempts to alter the party’s logo and hijack its leadership.
“It took court intervention for INEC to reverse the illegal adoption of the Kwankwasiyya logo during a kangaroo convention held in Abuja,” he added.
Dr. Major insisted that Kwankwaso’s past influence in the party would not grant him another “free ticket,” noting that any future presidential candidate of the NNPP would emerge through a transparent and democratic process.
“Kwankwaso is free as a Nigerian to pursue his ambitions, but he must do so without dragging the NNPP into his political battles or attacks against the current administration,” he said.
He also emphasized that the party is now considering other credible aspirants for the 2027 election and has moved on from past conflicts.
The NNPP urged the public to ignore any claims or statements from the Kwankwasiyya group suggesting they still have ties to the party, stating clearly that the NNPP promotes constructive issue-based politics and will no longer tolerate unnecessary controversies.
“Kwankwaso is better off forming his own party to pursue his interests. NNPP is focused on the future and will not be held back,” Major concluded.
