Women, young mothers and nursing mothers in Emohua Local Government Area ( EMOLGA) of Rivers State have been charged to manage monies they have to purchase food items and seafoods, such as crayfish, okra, periwinkles, oyster, locally available vegetables and small sardines which are less expensive but highly nutritious to enable them meet the health and nutritional requirements of their families, especially for the children between six to fifty nine months.
This charge was given to the young mothers by the wife of the Administrator of Emohua LGA,Dame Mrs.Ogondah Franklin Ajinwo, during the Rivers State’s Ministry of Health’s oPtimized Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Week (2nd-6th June,2025) as she donated mosquito-treated nets,Vitamin A supplements and children pampers to them at Okporowo-Ogbakiri(Thurs-4th June) and Oduoha(Fri-6th June) to help them cater better for the pregnant and new-born children.
Speaking as one who had tasted it,Mrs.Ogondah Ajinwo said,”many times, you may not have the kind of money you desire to go to market with, but as a mother you can still manage what is available to buy a little of this and that in meaningful combinations and add to vegetables, most of which are available locally,to make a good pot of soup”,noting the veracity of a well-fed family as it keeps both adults and children in good health, away from sicknesses.
Furthermore, she advised pregnant women, young and nursing mothers to access the services of nurses and other professionals that are available at the model health centers like Oduoha and Okporowo-Ogbakiri, adding the need to avoid quacks and self-medication because of the dangers associated therein. She also expressed appreciation to her husband,Comrade Barr.Franklin Ajinwo, the Administrator of Emohua LGA,for providing the needful funds and medical supplies for all the health centers in the area.
Earlier, the Medical Officer of Health(MoH) in the LGA,Dr.Deborah Amalaya admonished the women of Emohua LGA to embrace the programmes of the Ministry of Health as they are particularly designed to suit the medical and nutritional needs of the people in the area, such as Ante-natal care services, Family Planning Services (15-49 years),Vitamin A Supplementation(6-59 months), Nutrition Screening (6-59 months) and Immunization (0-23 months),saying that children that grow up under proper medical guidance are less prone to illnesses and diseases.
