Vigilante groups in Zamfara State have claimed that several of their members were mistakenly killed during a recent Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike, which was launched in response to a terrorist attack in Garin Mani, Maru Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday when vigilantes were reportedly pursuing fleeing bandits who had earlier invaded the village, killed residents, and abducted over 50 people, many of whom were farmers.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers stormed Garin Mani on motorcycles around midday, firing indiscriminately. Local vigilantes quickly mobilised to repel the assailants and gave chase as the bandits retreated.
“We were trailing the terrorists when a military jet flew in low and began dropping bombs. Some of us had to play dead to avoid being hit further,” one of the vigilantes told BBC Hausa.
While the Nigerian Air Force confirmed the deaths of two vigilantes and injuries to two others during the operation, the local groups insist the casualty count is higher.
Residents expressed disappointment over the apparent lack of coordination, urging the military to acknowledge the error and extend support to affected families. “Even if it was a mistake, they need to come out and talk to the people. We lost more than just two,” a community member said anonymously.
Military sources stated that the airstrike was conducted based on credible intelligence which indicated that a large number of terrorists were planning to launch another coordinated assault on nearby communities.
Speaking in Abuja, NAF spokesman Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet explained that over 30 motorcycles carrying armed fighters were identified from the air. The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the aircraft, prompting the air force to respond with targeted strikes, destroying more than 21 motorcycles and neutralising several combatants.
“Unfortunately, during the course of the mission, two vigilante members lost their lives and two others were injured,” said Gabkwet. “The Nigerian Air Force deeply regrets the incident and is currently conducting a full investigation.”
He added that the operation was part of a broader effort under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to prevent further attacks and secure the release of civilians kidnapped during the Garin Mani assault.
Residents, meanwhile, are calling on the government to reinforce security in the region, as fears grow that the attackers may return.
