A gas cylinder explosion at a plumbing market on Uga Street in Onitsha, Anambra State, has resulted in the death of one person and left six others injured.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the explosion occurred on Friday, May 16, 2025, while a welder was working on a metal object. The gas cylinder reportedly exploded after being exposed to excessive heat, causing widespread panic and injuring bystanders.
Officers from the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Headquarters quickly responded to the scene, working alongside concerned citizens to rescue the injured. The six victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the deceased was taken to a morgue.
Police have since cordoned off the area to prevent looting or any further incidents.
Concerned by the tragic event, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu issued safety guidelines aimed at preventing similar occurrences. These include regular inspection and maintenance of gas equipment, proper storage of gas cylinders, and strict adherence to manufacturers’ instructions and safety protocols.
